Field Day is about 2/3rds finished. The goal is to run 24 hours straight making contact with other amateur radio stations.
Why? Well, one never knows when there will be an ice storm. Or an earthquake. Or a hurricane. The event, which encourages folks to go operate "in the field" without regular antennas or power.
I stay personally involved with two Field Day events, the University of Arkansas. In the photo, I'm helping erect the club's 50 foot mast. The other is here at the Washington County, Ark., Emergency Operation Center.
Volunteering with the county EOC is one of those ways you can interact with emergency management to begin to exchange business cards before the event.
